Rural homes and properties often rely on the use of a private well for water. A properly constructed private well should require little routine maintenance for homeowners. But a little tender loving care can help ensure your well system will be in working condition for years to come. Here are some tips to help you keep up on the task:

Run an annual bacterial test of your well system and water. Especially after maintenance or repairs to the system. If there is ever a change in the taste, odor or appearance in your water, a bacterial test can help to identify any problem that might be causing it. Inspections Unlimited offers a variety of water and well testing services to help you keep you system in working order. Keep these tests and records in a safe place for future reference.

Periodically check the well cap and casing to make sure they are in good shape & clean. A dirty or leaking casing could cause your water to become contaminated, producing a possible health hazard for household members. Keep the top of your well at least one foot above the ground. Slope the ground away from your well to allow proper drainage.

Maintain a clean zone around your well to help prevent contamination. Do not allow wood, snow, leaves or other materials to accumulate around the well site. This includes keeping at least 50 feet between your well and any outdoor kennels or livestock stalls.

Limit the use and storage of chemicals around the site. Limit the application of pesticides or fertilizer in the area around the well. Do not store things in the well house especially pesticides or fertilizer.
