Downtown Salem is host to the historic homes of the State Capital. Many different construction styles are represented and each home with it’s unique history. Across the Willamette river and built over the rolling hills is the West Salem community. The homes in this area are often built over a basement and overlooking the valley below.
The community of Monmouth is home of Western Oregon University and until recently was one the few remaining “dry” towns in the United States, preventing the sale of all alcoholic beverages. Monmouth and Independence work together to provide their residents with a common school district and fire department, taking advantage of the population of both areas to add to the livability.
Originally named Cynthian, Dallas has a population over 15,000 and is the county seat of Polk County. In the past, Dallas has been considered the 'bedroom community' of those working in Salem, but now is considered a self supporting close-knit community on it's own. It has some fabulous restaurants and eateries and they host the local SummerFest, formerly called Crazy Dayz.
